What you engrave on decides what you can sell and what it costs you per piece. Here’s the range these machines are built around, and what each material is actually good for.
Which material, and what it needs
Acrylic2
Cuts cleanly with a flame-polished edge. Cast acrylic engraves to a frosted white; extruded doesn't — buy cast.
Leather5
Fast, high contrast, and smells like money at a market stall. Real leather and PU behave differently — test both.
Metal15
Needs an infrared or fiber laser — LP4 or LP5, not the LP2. Anodised aluminium and stainless mark permanently and are what most corporate work is.
Other7
Test cards, material sample packs and consumables for dialling in settings.
Stone & glass2
Slate coasters and glassware engrave to a frosted finish. Slower going, but the perceived value is high.
Wood16
The easiest place to start. Cuts and engraves on any diode machine, forgiving of settings, and cheap enough that ruining a few while you learn doesn't hurt.
